Gettin' Wiggy With It

There was a really interesting article in the Times this weekend about wigs and Orthodox women. Orthodox women feel that G-d wants them to conceal their hair for reasons of modesty (pageboys are just too sexy for the public). So in turn Ortho Ladies turn to wigs as a way to shield their natural locks from anyone but their husbands. The only problem with the wigs is most of the hair is from India, namely the Tirupati temple where people go to cut their hair as part of a sacred ritual. Sounds practical, no? But of course there's a problem. There's always a problem. Orthodox wigmakers have been utilizing this hair for ages, but uh oh, all of a sudden the hair is now deemed trayf as it comes from a Hindu place that is soiled by idol worship. Which means no more Cher wigs for the Orthos (payess a.k.a. side curls for balding men are also affected.) Gevalt!

High end wig makers (read: retail) with hair "from Europe" can help but not without spending plenty of gelt. Frankly, I'd like to see the women go to Ricky's and buy some really modern wigs. No disrespect at all - I just think it would be incredily cool to see some of these women on the L train with a hot pink bob (or an afro) peeking out of their black headscarves. Could happen. You never know.
